Unit 1 Disagreement

MEMORIZE THIS DIALOG
TOM Atkins teachers language in English Department in the Faculty of Letters. In is the tea break. He is staff room. There is another teacher here, too. His name I Ken Grimes, a friend of Tom’s. tom is smoking,

KEN : (sniffing) Phew ! is that a French cigarette ?
TOM : Pardon ?
KEN : Is that a French cigarette you’re smoking ?
TOM : Yes, that’s right. Why ? What’s the matter ?
KEN : I don’t understand how you can smoke French cigarettes. They make a
terrible smell
TOM : I like them very much. I prefer them to English cigarettes.
KEN : Have you got a lot of them ?
TOM : Yes about 200, why ?
KEN : Well…..er……could I buy some from you ?
TOM : Buy some from me ? but …….you don’t like French cigarette ?
KEN : No, I don’t. But my wife does. I can’t understand it.

Unit 2 Talkative Old Lady

( the information office in railway station. We can hear the sound of train coming and going and announcements over the loudspeakers)
OLD LADY : Good afternoon. I’d like some information about trains, please.
CLERK : Yes, madam. Which train? Where are you going?
OLD LADY : To New York. You see, I have a sister there and……
CLERK : so your question is ‘When’s the next t rain to New York?’ is the right?

OLD LADY : Eight pence ! oh dear! Think are getting so expensive!
CLERK : Yes, madam. Your train’s going to leave in half a minute now.
OLD LADY : Thank you. Oh! Which platform does it leave from?
CLERK : Platform 13
OLD LADY : Platform 13! Oh dear! I never travel on trains that leave from platform
13! 13’s an unlucky number. When’s that next train after the 4.30?

EXERCISE 1
It is half past nine (9.30). Deborah is having breakfast and listening to some music on the radio. The maid is crying at try with some more coffee on it.

TOM : Er….. more than that actually. Now, don’t worry about the money.
SUSAN : What do you mean ‘don’t worry about the money?’ someone has to!
You never worry about it! Now, how many teachers did you invite?
TOM : Well….naturally I had to invite all the teachers and not just some of
them. I had to!
SUSAN : All teachers? But how many teacher are there in collage?
TOM : Not many, really…..only 35.
SUSAN : what? 35 teachers! Are you mad, Tom? It isn’t just beer and cheese and

SUSAN : we need a bigger house!

Arthur and his chief engineer, don Anderson, went a small town near Manchester last week, they went on business and they had to stay the night, in small hotel. They had to eat in hotel, too.

serve good food.

Unit 6 Clarification

MEMORIZE THIS DIALOG
Arthur Tigers went out to lunch at 12 o’clock. It’s now 2.30 and he’s just walking into his office. His secretary is typing. Before Arthur went to lunch, he told his secretary, Miss Bradley, to ring him at the restaurant if a man called Mr. Powell came to see him. Arthur came back from lunch only a second ago.

MISS BRADLEY : ( nervously) Good afternoon, Mr. Tiger. Did you have a good
lunch?
ARTHUR : Yes, thank you, Miss Bradley. It was very good. Did anyone
phone while I was out?
MISS BRADLEY : No. nobody phoned, but …..er Mr. Powell came
ARTHUR : What? But he’s the man I told you about!
MISS BRADLEY : Yes I know, but……
ARTHUR : Well, if you knew, why didn’t you phone me? Mr. Powell has
some very important information. I wanted to talk him as soon as
possible. I told you all that before I left. Didn’t you understand

ARTHUR : I even gave you a card with the name and phone umber of the
restaurant! I put it on your desk.
MISS BRADLEY : But that’s just it! You didn’t give me the card. You didn’t put in

ARTHUR : What do you mean? Of course I did. I took the card out of my
wallet just before I went to lunch! Look! It isn’t my wallet
now!(suddenly) oh!

MEMORIZE THIS DIALOG
Arthur’s secretary has told him she would like to see him about something personal. She has just come into his office.
ARTHUR : Sit down, Miss Bradley. It’s something personal, you say?
MISS BRADLEY : Yes, you see, I’m going to get married next month and…..
ARTHUR : Get married? But I’m afraid it means I’ve got to give in my
notice. I’d like to leave at the end of the month.
ARTHUR : Really? I’m very dory to hear that. Do you intend to stop working
altogether, then?
MISS BRADLEY : Oh, o! My finance and I want to save up enough for a house and
we wouldn’t be able to do that if I stopped working right away. And isn’t that I don’t like my job here, either. I’d stay if Terry, that’s may finance,
weren’t a Canadian.
ARTHUR : A Canadian? I’m sorry, I don’t understand. What’s that got to do
with it?
MISS BRADLEY : Well, we’re both going to live in Canada as soon as we get
married.
ARTHUR : Oh, see. What does your finance do for a living ,by the way?
MISS BRADLEY : He’s an engineer. He often says he’d earn far more if he were
back in Canada. That’s why he wants to go back.
ARTHUR : But engineer are quite well paid here in England. How much does
he earn here. Then, if I may ask?
MISS BRADLEY : 20 poundsterling a week.
ARTHUR : Is that all? That’s very poor for a qualified engineer. You ought to
tell him he’d get far more if he came and worked for us.

were that low, I’d want to go to Canada, too. Where does he
work, by the way?

Unit 23 Racing

MEMORIZE THIS DIALOG
Joe Burns is famous racing-driver. He is being interviewed on sport programe.
REPORTER : You’d had a very dangerous life, haven’t you Joe? I men, you’ve almost
been killed several times, haven’t you?
JOE : Yes. I suppose that’s right.
REPORTER : When was you worst accident?
JOE : I’d say last year. It was during the British Grand Prix. I smashed into a
wall. The car was completely ruined and my left leg was broken.
Luckily, nobody was killed.
REPORTER : Is that the only time you’ve been…er…close to death?
JOE : No. Once, during the Mexican Grand Prix, two cars in front of me had a
bad accident. One of them ran into the other. I swarved to avoid them and
hit a fence. My car was badly damaged but luckily I wasn’t even hurt.
REPORTER : You must enjoy danger. I mean, you wouldn’t be racing-driver if you
didn’t, would you?
JOE : I don’t know about that. I had a very frightening experience quite
recently.
REPORTER : really? Whey was that? During your last race?
JOE : No. it was on my way to this studio. I had to drive through London
during the lunch hour.

EXERCISE 1

EXERCISE 2
These three cowboy were all killed a long time ago in Cactus City. We know they died but not who killed them. All we can say is that Tom was hanged, dick was shot dead and Harry was stabbed, all in 1887

TOM : You’ve already missed far too many lessons this term. Miss Grey.

MISS GREY : Well…er….you see…my grandfather’s ill. He’s in hospital and….and
he’s going to have an operation. I want to visit him.

PETER : What a strange question. It’s my longer hair. He’d never askjed me that
otherwise.

PETER : Oh, it’s just that all the snobbish waiter think people like me never have
any money.
SUSAN : He’s come back now.

EXERCISE 5
A few seconds ago, that old lady suddenly stepped into the road. The first would have killed her if the driver had no t stopped just in time. Unfortunately, the second car crashed into him and the third car swerved and hit the curbb. The first driver has lost his temper, the second driver has damaged both cars and the third has knocked down a lamp-post. None of this would have happened if the old lady had been careful. Unfortunately the damage has been done now.
